Johnston Construction Company Landfill History

In 1985, Johnston Construction bid what they thought was just another treatment plant job. It was a physical/chemical treatment plant at Modern Landfill, owned at the time by Waste Management. We were successful on the bid and in building the job, bringing it online in time to meet Waste Management’s schedule for opening another landfill cell.

That was the first of 30 projects at Modern Landfill totaling about $6,000,000. It also directly led to 25 jobs at 11 other Waste Management sites for another $14,000,000. Our relationship at Modern Landfill led to work for Republic Services when they bought the landfill from Waste Management. We have done another 10 jobs for them at Modern Landfill totaling $350,000 and work at other Republic Services sites totaling $225,000.

This kind of repeat business is typical for Johnston Construction. Our quality of work and service to the client make us the preferred contractor for our customers. Our experience with treatment plants got us our first job. Our understanding of a landfill facility’s aggressive scheduling needs combined with the quality of our work got us the remainder of the jobs.

The work we have done all fits into the JCC niche. Treatment plants and related leachate storage facilities and pumping stations have been our primary line of work since our inception in 1976. Years ago, we added to that many capabilities in the landfill gas area. Our jobs with landfill gas include everything from gas to energy generation facilities, to flares, to gas treatment systems. Environmental remediation work was a natural fit with our related company, Remediation, Inc.

Of course, our client list did not stop with those two customers. Our work has extended to many more landfill operators in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware. JCC has now completed more than 30 million dollars worth of work at landfills.

The delivery methods include both design-bid-build and design-build projects. Oftentimes on landfills, schedules are so tight there is not time for the traditional design-bid-build project. Design-build offers the ability to proceed concurrently with design and construction and sometimes with permitting. JCC’s engineer-driven construction company allows us to partner with design consultants and produce the most economical facilities with the minimum of effort.
