Project Description:
JCC was low bidder on a design-bid-build contract under a private-bid fixed price contract for the 500,000 gpd waste water treatment plant. The plant is a physical/chemical treatment plant located in Yorkanna, PA. It was designed and constructed to treat groundwater pumped from recovery wells drilled throughout the landfill. The project discharges to the Kreutz Creek.
The plant consisted of lime system to elevate the pH, Z Parkson Lamella Clarifiers and Z DynaSand Filters and an acid feed system to correct pH. It also included 3 air strippers to remove volatiles from the solvent-laden air. Finally, a JWI plate and frame filter press was installed. All this was tied together with a SCADA system to control and monitor the processes. Due to the necessity to discharge to a small stream, effluent requirements were very tight, requiring high rates of removal. The project was implemented as a fast track project, due to Waste Management’s need to meet consent decree guidelines. The project was completed on time to meet the regulatory deadlines, and on budget. It was the first of Johnston Construction’s approximately 30 projects at the site.
