In 1976, Johnston Construction Company began as a subsidiary of a New Jersey construction firm, Remsco Associates. In 1982, Johnston Construction Company was established as an employee owned company by Ken Johnston and Chuck Zitnick. In 1979 the office was moved to Dover, PA. Since 1982, Johnston Construction Company has been an independent firm, locally owned by its employees.

Initially, Johnston's services were established in central Pennsylvania, but over the years our service area has expanded to include Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Washington DC, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio.

The technical staff consists of the company officers, project managers, project engineers and supervisors with backgrounds in engineering fields. Many of our project managers are licensed as professional engineers. Johnston has an extensive administrative and accounting staff. Our field crews are run by experienced superintendents and supervisors. Depending on the project size, a superintendent or a project manager may be in charge of field work at the jobsite. Johnston has a Merit Shop craft workforce that has multi-trade capabilities and an excellent reputation for quality workmanship. Johnston owns an extensive fleet of specialized construction equipment to support operations.

Johnston's emphasis on quality workmanship has earned the company the "Accredited Quality Contractor" designation from the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Since Johnston employees have ownership in the company through an employee stock ownership, they have a personal stake in continuing our quality reputation.

Currently, the company serves a variety of public and private clients. In recent years, Johnston's workload has been divided between municipal and industrial projects. While much of our work is acquired based on plans and specifications, the majority of our projects are done as a design-build. Johnston is eager to understand and solve our clients' problems and our strength is in jobs that are unusual, difficult, or require significant technical ability.
