Johnston Construction Company is an environmental and remedial construction contractor located in Dover (York County), Pennsylvania and Glyndon (Baltimore County), MD. Johnston specializes in environmental project construction and hazardous waste cleanup. Our experience includes the construction of water and waste treatment facilities for both industrial and municipal clients. At area landfills, Johnston has built many projects for handling leachate and methane gas. Johnston also specializes in the construction of foundations for water and petroleum storage tanks. Johnston does millwrighting and rigging for industrial clients in Pennsylvania and Maryland. In 1997, Johnston merged with Remediation, Incorporated, an environmental remediation company. Johnston’s remedial capabilities include soil remediation, UST/AST removal, building decontamination, and groundwater treatment system construction. In 1976, Johnston Construction Company organized as a Pennsylvania corporation. The company began as a subsidiary of a New Jersey construction firm, Remsco Associates. An office was established in the Philadelphia area and was comprised of two employees. In 1982, Remsco offered the Company for sale to the employees of Johnston Construction. Ken Johnston and Chuck Zitnick invested their personal assets along with the assets of the Stock Bonus Plan to establish an employee owned company. In 1979 the office was moved to Dover, PA. Since 1982, Johnston Construction Company has been an independent firm, locally owned by its employees. Initially, Johnston’s services were established in central Pennsylvania, but over the years our service area has expanded to include eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Washington DC, Virginia, West Virginia, and South Carolina. We now serve clients in the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond. In 2002, we purchased a competitor in the Maryland market, J. Martin Christ.
The technical staff consists of the company officers, project managers and project engineers. All of these personnel have a Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering specialty and many are licensed as Professional Engineers. Johnston also has an extensive administrative and accounting staff. Our field crews are run by experienced superintendents and supervisors. Depending on the project size, a Superintendent or a Project Manager may be in charge of field work at the jobsite. Johnston has a Merit Shop craft workforce that has multi-trade capabilities and an excellent reputation for quality workmanship. Johnston owns a variety of large construction equipment to handle excavation, structural, mechanical, millwrighting, and hazardous waste cleanup projects. Johnston’s emphasis on quality workmanship has earned the company the “Accredited Quality Contractor” designation from the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Since Johnston employees have ownership in the company through an employee stock ownership, they have a personal stake in continuing our quality reputation. Currently, the company serves a variety of public and private clients. In recent years, Johnston’s workload has been divided between municipal and industrial projects. While much of our work is acquired based on plans and specifications, the majority of our projects are done as a design-build. Johnston is eager to understand and solve our clients’ problems and our strength is in jobs that are unusual, difficult, or require significant technical ability.
