Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- Constructed the foundation supporting the new 600,000-gallon storage tank.
- Installed new 12-inch water piping, valves and connections between the existing water system, valve vault and new tank.
- Provided civil work associated with the new precast concrete valve vault.
- Performed piping pressure testing and disinfection/sterilization with supporting documentation.
- Coordinated civil construction with Caldwell’s tank erection activities and the active Fort Meade water system.
- Supported installation of the tank mixing system through required site/civil coordination.
- American Water's Annapolis Hill Tank Replacement project involved the engineering, design and construction of a new 600,000-gallon ground water storage tank and associated infrastructure at Fort George G. Meade. The overall program also included placing the new tank into service and subsequently removing the existing 600,000-gallon storage tank.
- Johnston Construction Company was contracted by Caldwell Tanks, Inc. to perform the civil construction work associated with the new tank installation. The executed subcontract identifies Caldwell as the Contractor and Johnston Construction Company as the Subcontractor.
- JCC's subcontract scope included the civil work necessary to prepare the Annapolis Hill site for the new tank. This included site clearing and grubbing, erosion and sediment control measures, staking, site work and construction of the tank foundation in coordination with Caldwell's issued-for-construction tank design.
- The overall tank project required geotechnical evaluation and structural engineering to establish suitable foundation conditions for the new tank. The specifications called for soil borings, determination of soil-bearing capacity and design and construction of a foundation suitable for the new ground water storage structure.
- The overall project also incorporated a PAX Water tank mixing system or approved equal, including the associated control panel, electrical wiring and conduit. The system was designed to receive power from the existing electrical panel in the booster pump station.
- American Water's design-build requirements included progressive 30%, 60%, 90% and 100% design submissions, with the design addressing the new storage tank, tank foundation, inlet/outlet piping, utilities, site details and permitting requirements.
Concrete Services Division
- Performed reinforced concrete construction for the new 600,000-gallon ground water storage tank foundation.
- Formed approximately 1,710 SF of curved tank foundation wall.
- Placed approximately 63 CY of concrete for the primary tank foundation.
- Performed concrete placement, screeding, finishing, pointing and patching.
- Installed and coordinated reinforcing steel associated with the foundation construction.
- Provided concrete pumping support for foundation placement.
- Performed concrete curing using appropriate curing methods and materials.
- Coordinated concrete testing and quality-control activities.
- Sequenced foundation work with JCC and Caldwell Tanks to support subsequent tank erection.
- Concrete Services Division provided the specialized concrete construction associated with the new 600,000-gallon ground water storage tank at the Annapolis Hill Booster Station at Fort George G. Meade. The overall American Water project consisted of constructing a new ground storage tank and associated infrastructure to replace the existing Annapolis Hill storage tank.
- CSD performed its work as a Trade Subcontractor to Johnston Construction Company, which was performing the civil construction scope for Caldwell Tanks. The JCC subcontract included construction of the tank foundation as part of the civil improvements required before Caldwell could proceed with tank erection.
- The CSD estimate specifically identifies the project as “Ft Meade GST”, with Caldwell Tanks/CTI as the client, and identifies approximately 64 cubic yards of concrete work.
- A major component of CSD's work was construction of the circular tank foundation. The estimate identifies approximately 1,710.6 square feet of curved wall formwork specifically designated as “Tank Fdn.” This formed the reinforced concrete foundation wall supporting the new tank structure.
- CSD's concrete placement scope included approximately 63.36 cubic yards of wall concrete for the tank foundation. The estimate distinguishes this work from a small quantity of slab-on-grade concrete that was not part of the tank foundation itself.
