Key Accomplishments

  • Provided for continuous operation and monitoring of temporary bypass pumping equipment, including backup pumping capacity, flow management, and contingency measures to protect the existing wastewater infrastructure.
  • Performed wet-well cleaning operations involving removal of accumulated grit, grease, rags, debris, and residual wastewater, together with off-site disposal of removed solid materials.
  • Furnished and installed four new 20-inch eccentric plug valves on the raw lift pump suction connections, including associated pipe fittings, flanges, gaskets, bolts, spacers, and piping modifications required for installation.
  • JCC's valve replacement scope incorporated geared valve operators and provisions for adapting or reusing existing extended-stem operating mechanisms.
  • Removed the existing 2-inch galvanized drain-line system extending from the pump suction piping into the wet well, including associated piping components and existing wall penetrations.
  • Completed restoration of three existing penetrations through an approximately 24-inch-thick concrete wall separating the wet well and dry well, incorporating structural bonding materials, waterstop systems, and non-shrink grout to establish watertight seals.
  • Performed surface preparation and protective painting of the new valves, associated fittings, and existing suction piping extending from the wall to the pump connections.
  • Provided for 24-hour leak testing of the installed valves, suction piping connections, and sealed concrete wall penetrations before restoring normal wastewater flow through the pumping station.
  • Coordinated construction sequencing, bypass pumping, mechanical installations, testing, and startup activities with Anne Arundel County to support the continued operation of the wastewater treatment facility.
  • The Project Was Completed On February 25, 2014.

Project Description

Johnston Construction Company served as Prime Contractor for the replacement of four 20-inch suction valves serving the raw wastewater lift pumps at the Annapolis Water Reclamation Facility in Annapolis, Maryland.

JCC's work included temporary wastewater bypass pumping designed to accommodate approximately 15 million gallons per day (MGD), allowing the influent pumping station to undergo valve replacement while incoming wastewater was diverted around the construction area.
