Key Accomplishments

  • JCC’s scope included complete project design, specifications, drawings, construction management, sanitary pump station improvements, stormwater pump station improvements, demolition, site work, valve vault improvements, force main improvements, bypass / pigging connection work, new pumps, new controls, electrical gear, startup, commissioning, and turnover.
  • The sanitary pump station work included new explosion-proof grinder pumps, PVC piping, pump appurtenances, control panel, pump control alarm signal, monitoring, testing, valve vault gate and check valve replacement, new force main valve and valve box, lockable aluminum hatch with cane vent, air release valve work, and force main pigging, flushing, and testing.
  • The stormwater pump station work included new pump station top slab with lockable aluminum hatches and cane vent, explosion-proof pumps, PVC piping, appurtenances, control panel, pump control alarm signal, monitoring, testing, new electrical gear, explosion-proof junction boxes, and complete system commissioning.
  • The improvements increased automatic operation, reliability, operation and maintenance access, environmental protection, alarm monitoring, and NFPA 820-related electrical compliance for the sanitary and stormwater pumping systems.
  • The work required coordination with Crockett Facilities Services, U.S. Department of State / BIMC personnel, Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, B & R Electrical Contractors, WSSC requirements, permitting authorities, equipment suppliers, and facility operations staff.
  • Johnston Construction Company completed the Beltsville Information Management Center Sanitary and Stormwater Pump Station Improvements project as the design-builder for Crockett Facilities Services. The project was performed at the Beltsville Information Management Center / U.S. Department of State facility located at 8101 Odell Road in Beltsville, Maryland.
  • The project consisted of design and construction improvements to both the existing sanitary pump station and stormwater pump station. The work was based on recommendations from an engineering evaluation of the facility’s existing pump stations and was intended to improve environmental compliance, operation, maintenance, automatic pump operation, code compliance, reliability, and future maintainability.
  • JCC provided design-build services for the project, including design coordination, construction planning, permitting support, equipment coordination, subcontractor coordination, and construction of the pump station improvements. Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson provided design services for the sanitary and stormwater pump station improvements.
  • The sanitary pump station improvements included replacement of the valve vault gate and check valves, installation of a new force main valve and valve box, installation of a new top slab with lockable aluminum hatch and cane vent, furnishing and installation of explosion-proof grinder pumps, PVC piping, appurtenances, and a new control panel.
  • The sanitary pump station work also included furnishing and installing new pump control panel alarm signal, monitoring, and testing components. JCC also furnished and installed new electrical gear, including explosion-proof junction boxes, cleared brush and trees, restored access to the air release vault, replaced the air release valve, and pigged, flushed, and tested the force main.
  • The sanitary pump station was upgraded with two new explosion-proof pumps and electrical gear to meet NFPA 820 requirements. The new control panel provided automatic pump alternation to balance wear between the pumps. The system also provided local visual and audible alarms for pump failure, high level, pump overheating, seal leak detection, and no-flow conditions in the force main. A redundant alarm panel was provided in the 24-hour security area so prompt action could be taken.
  • Operation and maintenance improvements for the sanitary pump station included replacement of pump station and valve vault hatches, installation of a bypass pumping / pigging connection, and new valves on the force main within and adjacent to the valve vault. An extra explosion-proof pump and cable were provided, and the electrical gear was designed for future pump replacement by Crockett / BIMC maintenance staff.
