Carlisle Water Treatment Plant – Slide & Stop Gate Installation

Key Accomplishments

• Installed two stainless-steel/aluminum stop gates, sized 42" x 64" and 45" x 56".
• Coordinated gate installation within existing concrete channels using surface-mounted side and invert frames with approximately 1-inch grout due to the limited size of the existing channel slots.
• Incorporated corrosion-resistant gate components including 304L stainless steel, 5083-H32 aluminum, UHMWPE seals, neoprene invert seals, and 316 stainless-steel anchor fasteners.
• Installed manually operated gate systems with provisions for safe deployment and lifting of the stop gates.
• The gate package was manufactured by Whipps, Inc. and consisted of four project-specific slide and stop gate assemblies. The equipment included one 42" x 60" Series 923 stainless-steel slide gate, one 45" x 52" Series 923 stainless-steel slide gate, one 42" x 64" Series 523 stainless-steel/aluminum stop gate, and one 45" x 56" Series 521 stainless-steel/aluminum stop gate.
• Installation of the gates required accommodation of the plant's existing concrete channel conditions. Because the existing slots in the concrete were too small for the proposed assemblies, the approved gate configuration utilized side and invert frames surface-mounted to the existing channels with approximately 1-inch-thick grout. This approach allowed the new gate assemblies to be incorporated into the existing water-treatment infrastructure without relying on the original undersized slots.
• The two Series 923 slide gates incorporated extensive 304L stainless-steel construction, including the slide plates, stiffeners, stem connectors, frame guides, yokes and frame inverts. The assemblies also utilized UHMWPE frame seals, neoprene invert seals and 316 stainless-steel anchor fasteners. The slide-gate design was based on AWWA C561-14, with stainless-steel welding requirements in accordance with AWS D1.6.
• The stop-gate assemblies combined 5083-H32 aluminum slide components with 304L stainless-steel frame components and 316 stainless-steel anchors. The manufacturer's engineering standards referenced AWWA C561 and C562 requirements for the stop-gate assemblies.
• The project also incorporated operational considerations specific to the existing installation. The 42" x 60" slide gate was limited to approximately 48 inches of slide travel because of the manual operator height. The stop gates were furnished with cast handles for manual deployment and balanced lifting, together with lifting eyes for conditions requiring mechanical assistance.
• The Project Was Completed On 13th October, 2015.
