Chesapeake Beach WRTP Clarifier Launder Covers & Treatment Structure Access Improvements

Key Accomplishments

• JCC removed the existing clarifier launder-cleaning mechanisms where required to accommodate the new cover systems.
• The work included structural aluminum framing and grating platforms over the designated denitrification filters and clearwell areas.
• JCC installed new aluminum handrails and safety components around the treatment structures and removed portions of the existing handrails where required for the new construction.
• The grating and framing systems incorporated penetrations and access openings for treatment equipment, piping, valves, instrumentation, and maintenance activities.
• The project included miscellaneous-metal fabrication, welding, anchorage, field fitting, supports, fasteners, and structural coordination within the operating wastewater reclamation treatment plant.
• JCC coordinated special coatings, painting, surface preparation, and protection of new and existing metal components exposed to the wastewater-treatment environment.
• The final executed contract reflected a negotiated scope using designated covers manufactured by Kershner and removal of the mudwell-cover portion from the original proposal.
• JCC coordinated construction around active plant operations while maintaining safe access and minimizing interference with the Town’s wastewater-treatment processes.
• Johnston Construction Company completed the Chesapeake Beach WRTP Clarifiers, Denitrification Filters, Mudwell & Clearwell Covers project in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland.
• The project was performed under a direct contract with the Town of Chesapeake Beach.
• The work was completed at the Town of Chesapeake Beach’s wastewater reclamation treatment plant and focused on improving access, safety, protection, and maintainability around the clarifiers, denitrification filters, mudwell, and clearwell treatment structures.
• The project specifications were prepared by McCrone of Annapolis, Maryland. The contract documents included general requirements, miscellaneous metals and structural aluminum framing, special coatings, painting, safety equipment, and clarifier launder-cover requirements.
