Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- Coordinated foundation construction with the piling subcontractor and tank erection operations, including site layout, support of piling activities and setting of anchor bolts furnished by CB&I. JCC also prepared dedicated stone working areas around the foundation to accommodate CB&I’s crane operations during tank construction.
- Completed the underground water-system improvements connecting the new tank to the Town’s existing distribution system. The overall project included approximately 1,225 linear feet of 8-inch water main and fittings, while JCC’s subcontract specifically included piping shown on the civil drawings, including 8-inch ductile iron piping extending to the tank riser connection.
- Constructed the exterior valve-vault and associated civil piping infrastructure required to integrate the new elevated storage tank with the municipal water system. The work required close coordination between the underground piping, tank foundation and subsequent tank-system connections.
- Performed extensive site-development work including clearing, excavation, backfill, compaction, undercut excavation, stone ballast, fencing and paving. The project bid schedule included approximately 710 square yards of access-road construction, and the completed site incorporated a new paved roadway providing permanent access to the water-storage facility.
- Installed and maintained erosion and sediment-control measures throughout construction and completed post-construction stormwater-management improvements. JCC’s site package included stormwater work and restoration, while the overall project incorporated a bioretention pond, paved access improvements and rehabilitation of areas disturbed during construction.
- Managed civil construction within a constrained active public-school environment at Bohemia Manor School. Construction had to be sequenced around scheduled sporting events while adjacent athletic fields remained available for use, and deliveries during school hours were generally restricted to 9:00 AM through 2:30 PM to minimize disruption to school operations.
- Executed the site work through defined construction milestones, including early completion of the water-main and access-road work, followed by valve-vault and tank-foundation construction, site restoration, stormwater improvements and final rehabilitation. This sequencing required coordination among JCC, CB&I, KCI Technologies, the Town and other project participants.
- Johnston Construction Company performed a major civil subcontract package for the Chesapeake City Water Storage Tank project in Cecil County, Maryland. The project was constructed for the Town of Chesapeake City, designed by KCI Technologies, Inc., and managed under CB&I LLC as the Prime Contractor. JCC’s scope supported construction of a new elevated water-storage facility at 2755 Augustine Herman Highway.
- The overall project provided a new 300,000-gallon elevated water storage tank, connection to the existing municipal water-distribution system, permanent access improvements and related site infrastructure. The tank was designed with a high-water level approximately 113 feet above the top of the foundation and was constructed to increase the Town’s elevated water-storage capacity.
- JCC’s subcontract covered the project’s primary civil and site-development activities. The work included erosion and sediment controls, clearing, fencing, paving, post-construction stormwater management, tank-foundation construction, underground piping, exterior vault work, excavation, backfill and compaction, undercut excavation, stone ballast, site layout and anchor-bolt installation.
- Tank-foundation construction required close coordination with CB&I and the piling subcontractor. JCC provided support for piling operations, performed foundation-related site work, established the required layout and installed CB&I-furnished anchor bolts. The civil package also included preparation of stone working areas around the foundation for crane operations associated with construction of the elevated tank.
- The water-system portion of the project included approximately 1,225 linear feet of 8-inch water main and fittings, providing the connection between the new tank facility and the Town’s existing water-distribution infrastructure. JCC’s specific piping scope included the civil piping shown on the project drawings, extending through the tank-site piping system to the tank riser connection, together with the exterior vault and associated excavation and backfill.
Concrete Services Division
- Performed the concrete construction package for the foundation of the Town of Chesapeake City’s new 300,000-gallon elevated water storage tank. CSD’s subcontract specifically included forming and concrete-placement labor for the tank foundation, interior tank floor slab and overflow splash pad, supporting the larger elevated-tank construction program.
- Constructed the curved-wall concrete portion of the elevated-tank foundation, including approximately 476.47 square feet of curved-wall formwork and placement of approximately 48.53 cubic yards of wall concrete. This work required accurate form construction and placement in coordination with CB&I’s tank-foundation drawings and the geometry of the future elevated structure.
- Performed concrete work for the interior tank floor slab, including slab-on-grade forming and approximately 3.80 cubic yards of slab concrete placement, providing the interior concrete surface within the completed foundation system.
- Completed multiple concrete-finishing operations across the tank foundation, including approximately 380.37 square feet of float-and-screed finishing and approximately 205.27 square feet of machine-trowel finishing. These operations were coordinated with placement activities to achieve the required finished concrete surfaces.
- Performed detailed post-placement concrete finishing and surface treatment, including approximately 476.47 square feet of pointing and patching and approximately 34.03 square feet of bag finishing, supporting a clean and complete final foundation appearance.
- Provided curing for approximately 1,067 square feet of completed concrete surfaces, together with the labor and materials required for the curing operations included within CSD’s subcontract. Proper curing formed an important part of completing the foundation concrete in accordance with the project requirements.
- Completed concrete-joint and accessory work associated with the foundation, including approximately 34 square feet of pre-molded joint work and 68 linear feet of joint sealing, together with concrete-accessory labor for items such as waterstop, caulking and related foundation accessories where required.
- Provided the full labor operation required to support forming, placement, finishing and curing, including mobilization and demobilization of concrete equipment, form-lumber activities, installation and stripping of forms, concrete-placement labor, finishing labor, curing labor and associated concrete construction support.
- Coordinated concrete placements with Johnston Construction Company’s supporting resources and project services. JCC provided or paid for items including ready-mixed concrete material, concrete-pump rental and concrete-testing services, while CSD coordinated those activities with its forming and placement operations.
- Performed the foundation work as part of a carefully phased project located on an active public-school property. The overall construction schedule was coordinated around school activities and adjacent athletic fields, with restricted delivery periods and milestone requirements governing the tank foundation, tank erection and subsequent site restoration.
- Concrete Services Division, LLC completed the concrete construction package associated with the Chesapeake City Water Storage Tank project in Cecil County, Maryland. The project was undertaken for the Town of Chesapeake City and designed by KCI Technologies, Inc., with CB&I LLC serving as the Prime Contractor, Johnston Construction Company performing the major civil subcontract package, and CSD providing specialized concrete construction for the elevated-tank foundation.
- The overall project involved construction of a new 300,000-gallon elevated water storage tank at 2755 Augustine Herman Highway, together with a new water-main connection, access-road improvements and related site infrastructure. The elevated tank was designed with the high-water level approximately 113 feet above the top of the foundation, making the reinforced concrete foundation a critical structural component of the completed storage facility.
- CSD’s direct scope concentrated on the tank foundation, interior tank floor slab and overflow splash pad. The subcontract included the labor, materials and tools necessary for concrete forming, placement, finishing and curing in accordance with the project contract documents, CSD control estimate, CB&I project specifications and CB&I foundation drawings.
- A major component of CSD’s work was the curved foundation wall. The subcontract billing quantities identified approximately 476.47 square feet of curved-wall formwork and approximately 48.53 cubic yards of wall concrete placement. The interior floor-slab work included approximately 3.80 cubic yards of slab-on-grade concrete, together with the associated formwork and finishing operations.
