Key Accomplishments
- JCC installed two sets of baffles designed to help control flow patterns and reduce undesirable back-mixing between treatment stages.
- Installed approximately 34-inch-wide by 80-inch-long stainless-steel baffle assemblies in accordance with the referenced Kruger mechanical installation drawings.
- Furnished and installed eight stainless-steel baffle braces along with associated support brackets, anchors, fasteners, threaded rods, washers, and connection hardware.
- JCC coordinated the work within a completely drained treatment tank and incorporated OSHA-compliant confined-space safety procedures for personnel performing the installation.
- Installed the baffle assemblies around the existing treatment-process configuration while maintaining the required clearances and alignment with existing structures.
- Utilized stainless-steel anchorage and fastening components suited for the wastewater-treatment environment.
- JCC completed the installation in accordance with the Kruger baffle drawings and City of York requirements for the Train 2 treatment process.
- Johnston Construction Company served as Prime Contractor for the Train 2 Baffle Installation at the City of York Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project addressed flow-control conditions within the existing Train 2 treatment process through installation of new stainless-steel deflection baffles.
- The project documentation identifies an issue with back-mixing of internal recycle flow through an opening between anaerobic Stage B and anoxic Stage C. The proposed baffle arrangement was intended to redirect flow through this area and improve separation between the adjacent treatment stages. The field sketch illustrates the deflection-baffle arrangement adjacent to the existing approximately 30-inch internal recycle piping and the opening between the two process zones.
- JCC's executed proposal included furnishing and installing two sets of baffles at each of two locations within the Train 2 process. The complete installation consisted of four approximately 2'-10" × 6'-8" × 1/4" stainless-steel baffles and eight baffle braces, with all anchors and fasteners specified as stainless steel. The baffle material was specified as Type 304 stainless steel.
- The installation followed the mechanical details provided by Kruger. The submittal package identifies the principal components as the mechanical baffle installation assembly, a 34-inch × 80-inch baffle weldment, stainless-steel brace brackets, and approximately 42-inch-long baffle braces. The associated hardware included stainless-steel nuts, threaded rods, screws, flat washers, and lock washers.
- Because the work occurred inside an existing wastewater-treatment process tank, access and safety were important parts of the installation. JCC's proposal required the tank to be completely drained to access the baffle locations and specifically recognized the tank as a permitted confined space. Appropriate OSHA-compliant confined-space safety measures were included for completing the work.
