Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- JCC performed its work under subcontract to CB&I Storage Tank Solutions, LLC, which held the prime contract with Pennsylvania American Water for the East Vincent Elevated Tank Project.
- JCC’s work supported construction of a 750M WSD elevated water storage tank with a 168-foot top capacity level, including site work, foundation work, piping, electrical, instrumentation, temporary roads, erosion and sediment controls, and closeout support.
- Major work included preliminary site work, excavation, tank foundation construction, underground piping, electrical and instrumentation work, site restoration, erosion and sediment controls, site layout, utility coordination, deadman installation, crane access, temporary roads, and tank foundation conduit coordination.
- The work required coordination with CB&I Storage Tank Solutions, Pennsylvania American Water, Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, utility providers, tank design and erection personnel, electrical and instrumentation suppliers, testing agencies, inspectors, and project stakeholders.
- The project required compliance with the subcontract documents, project drawings and specifications, CB&I requirements, Pennsylvania American Water requirements, AWWA D100 tank requirements, site work requirements, foundation requirements, electrical and instrumentation requirements, erosion and sediment control requirements, testing requirements, safety requirements, documentation requirements, and closeout requirements.
- The project included construction and installation of a new elevated spheroidal water storage tank and related process, electrical, and site improvements. The work was performed at the elevated tank site located at 11 Dunlap Road, Spring City, Pennsylvania.
- The elevated tank was designed as a 750,000-gallon water storage facility. The tank specification required design, fabrication, construction, testing, and inspection in accordance with AWWA D100, with a net tank capacity of 750,000 gallons.
- JCC’s base scope included the civil, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation scopes of work required to support construction of the East Vincent 750K EWST. This included project scheduling, weekly progress reporting, record drawings, warranties, O&M manuals, closeout data, and coordination of field activities.
- Site work included erosion and sediment control, bulk grading, asphalt and stone paving, riprap, fencing, plantings, overflow basin work, and related site restoration. JCC’s scope also included temporary fencing around the tank worksite and temporary construction access for tank work.
- Tank foundation work included excavation, spoils removal, mud slab, reinforced concrete footing, ring wall, and tank slab construction. JCC’s foundation work also included installation of CB&I-supplied anchor bolts and installation of conduit passing through the tank foundation.
- JCC’s backfill scope included use of onsite soils outside the tank foundation and stone inside the foundation beneath the tank slab. The work required coordination with site conditions, foundation subgrade preparation, structural fill, compaction, and testing requirements.
- The project site conditions included a wooded parcel in East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, located south of Dunlap Road. The tank site was near an existing municipal water facility, with surrounding golf course and adjacent developed areas, requiring controlled site access, construction traffic coordination, and careful site management.
