Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- Johnston Construction Company’s scope included replacement of three existing Intermediate and Emergency Effluent pumps with new vertical turbine, open-lineshaft, product-lubricated pumps, along with piping, fittings, electrical coordination, controls, instrumentation, and system integration.
- The work included project planning, site-specific safety planning, verification of existing utilities, coordination with American Water representatives, quality assurance / quality control, engineering field review, site restoration, and preparation of as-built drawings.
- The project required close coordination with American Water’s facility operations, safety procedures, military installation requirements, Davis-Bacon wage requirements, and Fort Meade permitting and access requirements.
- Johnston Construction Company performed the Fort Meade WWTP – Intermediate and Emergency Effluent Pumping Station Pump Replacements project for American Water Operations and Maintenance, Inc. at Fort Meade, Maryland. The project was delivered as a design-build renewal and replacement project for the wastewater treatment plant’s Intermediate and Emergency Effluent pumping station.
- The work consisted of engineering design and construction services required to rehabilitate and replace three existing Intermediate and Emergency Effluent pumps and associated systems. Johnston Construction Company provided materials, surveying, engineering design, permitting, labor, equipment, final engineered construction drawings and specifications, construction services, startup support, training, and closeout documentation required to complete the work.
- A major component of the project included furnishing and installing three vertical turbine, open-lineshaft, product-lubricated pumps. The specifications required pump shop drawings, pump curves, motor sizing, VFD model information, critical speed analysis, vibration testing after installation, piping and fittings, electrical and control work, full system integration, new discharge pressure gauges at each pump, and eight hours of startup training after the first pump was installed.
- Johnston Construction Company coordinated design-build deliverables, including 90% design documents, 100% final amendments, final construction drawings, shop drawings, and as-built drawings. The design work included equipment layout, proposed modifications, pump motor sizing, VFD information, electrical room ventilation review to maintain 40°C, and coordination of materials and equipment with American Water’s standards and requirements.
- The project also included project-management and field-coordination requirements. Johnston Construction Company attended project meetings, prepared project minutes, submitted a site-specific safety plan, verified existing utilities, coordinated conflicting utility crossings, maintained a clean and safe work site, provided engineering field review, submitted weekly field-review reports, and performed QA/QC responsibilities throughout the work.
- The scope also included restoration of disturbed areas to pre-construction condition and compliance with American Water standards, Maryland Department of the Environment requirements, Fort Meade requirements, OSHA/EPA requirements, federal and state laws, and applicable construction and safety standards.
- The project was completed in 31st December,2015
Electrical Services Division
- Electrical Services Division, LLC performed electrical work for the Fort Meade WWTP Intermediate & Emergency Effluent Pumping Station Pump Replacements project.
- The project included electrical support for pump replacement work at the Wastewater Treatment Plant Intermediate and Emergency Effluent Pumping Station at Fort Meade, Maryland.
- ESD’s scope included electrical demolition, starter removal from the MCC, HOA switch removal from the MCC, conduit and wire removal from the MCC, local disconnect installation, conduit, wire, connections, temporary control connections, testing coordination, and record drawings.
- Major electrical work included furnishing and installing local disconnects and mounting brackets at the motor locations.
- ESD furnished and installed conduit, wire, and electrical connections required to support the pump replacement work.
- ESD provided temporary connection of existing controls to keep the system operating during the work.
- The project required coordination with Johnston Construction Company, American Water, Fort Meade facility requirements, testing services, material providers, equipment furnished by others, and the overall design-build pump replacement sequence.
- Electrical Services Division, LLC performed the electrical subcontract scope for the Fort Meade Wastewater Treatment Plant Intermediate & Emergency Effluent Pumping Station Pump Replacements project in Fort Meade, Maryland. The work was completed under subcontract to Johnston Construction Company for Job No. 2014-09.
- The overall project was a design-build pump replacement project for American Water Operations and Maintenance, Inc. / American Water Military Services at the Fort Meade Wastewater Treatment Plant. The work supported rehabilitation and replacement of the existing Intermediate and Emergency Effluent pumping station pumps and associated electrical and control systems.
- ESD’s scope included furnishing labor, materials, tools, equipment, and supervision necessary to complete the electrical work associated with the pump replacements. The subcontract scope included electrical demolition, new electrical installation, temporary control connections, coordination, testing support, and as-built / record drawings.
- Electrical demolition work included removal of the starter from the motor control center, removal of the HOA switch from the MCC, and removal of conduit and wire from the MCC associated with the existing pump equipment.
- New electrical work included furnishing and installing local disconnects and mounting brackets at the motor locations. ESD also furnished and installed conduit, wire, and electrical connections required to support the new pump equipment and related electrical systems.
- The work included temporary connection of existing controls to keep the system operating during construction. This temporary controls work was required to support continued operation of the pumping system while pump replacement work was being performed.
- The broader project requirements included installation of variable frequency drives in the electrical room, feeding VFDs from existing MCC breakers, installing local disconnects from the VFDs, wiring local disconnects to the new motors, and coordinating control wiring as required for the completed pump replacement system.
