Key Accomplishments

Johnston Construction Company

  • Constructed the reinforced-concrete support structure, tank foundation, steel water-storage bowl, access systems, piping, coatings, and operating appurtenances required for the complete elevated storage facility.
  • Constructed a separate line maintenance building to support Charles County water-utility field operations, equipment storage, materials, and maintenance activities.
  • Installed site water and sewer connections, process piping, valves, supports, tank overflow and drainage systems, plumbing, and associated utility infrastructure.
  • Furnished and installed the electrical service, distribution equipment, standby generator, automatic transfer switch, grounding, lighting, surge protection, and equipment connections.
  • Coordinated a complete instrumentation and control system with programmable controllers, control panels, tank-level monitoring, alarms, communications, software, and SCADA integration.
  • Installed a hydrodynamic tank-mixing system to promote water circulation and improve water quality within the elevated tank.
  • Installed cathodic-protection equipment to support the long-term protection of submerged metallic tank components.
  • Coordinated power-system studies, electrical testing, HVAC testing and balancing, process startup, commissioning, operator training, record drawings, and project closeout.
  • Johnston Construction Company served as the prime contractor for the Gleneagles Water Tower Construction project in White Plains, Maryland.
  • The principal project feature was a new two-million-gallon composite elevated water storage tank.
  • The tank consists of a reinforced-concrete support structure and a steel water-storage bowl, together with the foundation, access systems, ladders, platforms, hatches, vents, overflow piping, process piping, coatings, safety equipment, and other appurtenances required for operation and maintenance.
  • JCC coordinated the design and permitting required for the tank, offices, maintenance building, utilities, mechanical systems, electrical systems, instrumentation, controls, and site development.

Concrete Services Division

  • Concrete Services Division, LLC performed the concrete forming, placement, finishing, and curing work associated with the Gleneagles Water Tower Construction project.
  • Performed concrete work for the foundation and structural components of the new two-million-gallon composite elevated water storage tank.
  • Formed and placed the main tank foundation, tank slab, tank derrick slab, and two elevated concrete floors within the tank shaft.
  • Constructed concrete foundations and structural elements for the line maintenance building, including footings, frost walls, column footings, columns, slabs, and pipe-support pads.
  • Coordinated the placement of approximately 454 cubic yards of concrete throughout the tank, pump-station, and maintenance-building structures.
  • Installed approximately 741 square feet of footing formwork.
  • Installed approximately 159 square feet of slab-on-grade formwork.
  • Installed approximately 1,426 square feet of curved-wall formwork for the composite tank foundation and support structure.
  • Installed approximately 1,140 square feet of straight-wall formwork.
  • Installed approximately 338 square feet of column formwork.
  • Placed approximately 38 cubic yards of concrete for footings.
  • Placed approximately 152 cubic yards of slab-on-grade concrete.
  • Placed approximately 260 cubic yards of wall concrete.
  • Placed approximately 5 cubic yards of column concrete.

Electrical Services Division

  • Electrical Services Division performed the electrical construction associated with the Gleneagles Water Tower Construction project.
  • Furnished and installed the electrical service, distribution equipment, panelboards, surge-protection equipment, conduit, conductors, boxes, devices, and equipment connections required for the new water-tower facility.
  • Installed electrical systems serving the two-million-gallon composite elevated water storage tank, office and storage areas, pump station, line maintenance building, site improvements, and associated equipment.
  • Installed interior, exterior, site, and tank lighting together with switches, receptacles, controls, branch circuits, and associated wiring.
  • Installed extensive underground electrical ductbanks, including excavation, reinforcing steel, concrete encasement, conduit installation, backfilling, and coordination with other underground utilities.
  • Installed a grounding ring connected to the base of the composite water tower and coordinated grounding with the tank structure, electrical service, equipment, and lightning-protection system.
  • Furnished and installed the electrical portions of the lightning-protection system while coordinating tank-mounted downleads furnished by the tank manufacturer.
  • Installed eighteen 6-inch conduits through the tank-foundation area for future antenna and communications use.
  • Furnished and installed fire-alarm equipment and associated raceways, conductors, devices, and system connections included within ESD’s electrical scope.
  • Installed conduit and wiring serving instrumentation, RTU, HVAC, and other equipment furnished and physically installed by others.
  • Coordinated electrical connections for the standby generator and automatic transfer switch furnished by others.
  • Coordinated electrical systems with the tank structure, ladders, handrails, architectural areas, mechanical systems, plumbing, process piping, instrumentation, controls, and site-development work.
  • Electrical Services Division performed the electrical construction associated with the Gleneagles Water Tower project in White Plains, Maryland.
  • The overall project includes a new two-million-gallon composite elevated water storage tank, office and storage areas within the tank support structure, a separate line maintenance building, pump-station improvements, site utilities, standby power, instrumentation, controls, paving, drainage, and complete site development.
