Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- The work included modifications to the existing caustic soda feed system, including replacement of the existing chemical-feed equipment with larger pumping units and associated piping, valves, controls, and electrical connections.
- JCC replaced the South Filter Building motor control center and coordinated new panelboards, harmonic-filter equipment, power distribution, controls, testing, startup, and arc-flash requirements.
- The project included replacement of the standby diesel generators at both the Gorman Avenue Water Treatment Plant and Worcester Street facilities.
- Concrete rehabilitation included resurfacing, deep and shallow spall repairs, repair of abandoned embedded items, crack-pressure injection, reinforcing-steel treatment, and application of high-performance protective coatings.
- The Town of Ocean City awarded Johnston Construction Company Contract No. WR/OC-230A. The agreement required JCC to complete the rehabilitation of two existing contact clarifiers and the associated mechanical, structural, electrical, chemical-feed, generator, and site improvements.
- The overall project included six principal areas of work:
- Mobilization and project coordination Clarifier rehabilitation and equipment replacement Existing caustic soda feed-system modifications South Filter Building motor control center replacement Gorman Avenue diesel-generator replacement Worcester Street diesel-generator replacement
- The project also included unit-price concrete restoration work consisting of concrete resurfacing, concrete-spall repair, abandoned embedded-item repair, and pressure-injection repair of cracks.
- The principal process work involved rehabilitation of the two existing circular solids-contact clarifiers at the Gorman Avenue Water Treatment Plant.
- JCC coordinated removal of the existing clarifier equipment, cleaning and preparation of the tanks, inspection of the concrete structures, completion of concrete repairs, application of protective coatings, and installation of the new clarifier mechanisms.
- The new clarifier systems were designed to provide chemical mixing, flocculation, clarification by sedimentation, and collection and removal of excess sludge.
- Each clarifier installation included the mechanical and structural components necessary for a complete operating system.
B & R Electrical Contractors
- BRE’s scope included electrical demolition, conduit, conductors, boxes, devices, lighting, equipment connections, switchgear connections, inspection, testing, startup, and project closeout.
- The electrical work supported the rehabilitation and equipment replacement of two existing solids-contact clarifiers, including new clarifier drives, mechanical equipment, disconnects, controls, and associated field connections.
- The project included electrical work for replacement of the South Filter Building motor control center, including MCC F, Panels P1 and P2, harmonic-filter equipment, current transformers, startup support, and associated power-distribution connections.
- BRE installed the applicable electrical infrastructure and connections required for replacement of the Gorman Avenue and Worcester Street standby diesel-generator systems.
- BRE furnished and installed conduit, wire, and field connections in accordance with Electrical Drawings E-1 through E-16 and Instrumentation Drawings I-1 through I-9.
- The work was coordinated with Johnston Construction Company’s clarifier demolition, concrete rehabilitation, mechanical-equipment replacement, chemical-feed modifications, generator installation, control-system work, and plant-operational requirements.
- BRE coordinated electrical shutdowns, equipment transitions, inspections, self-performed testing, and startup so that the Town’s water-treatment facilities could remain operational during construction.
- The overall project included rehabilitation of two existing solids-contact clarifiers, modifications to the existing caustic soda feed system, replacement of the South Filter Building motor control center, replacement of the Gorman Avenue standby diesel generator, and replacement of the Worcester Street standby diesel generator.
- BRE’s electrical subcontract was divided among five principal project areas:
- Clarifier rehabilitation and equipment replacement Existing caustic soda feed-system modifications South Filter Building MCC replacement Gorman Avenue diesel-generator replacement Worcester Street diesel-generator replacement
- BRE coordinated its work with Johnston Construction Company’s overall project schedule, equipment demolition, structural and concrete rehabilitation, clarifier installation, process piping, chemical-feed equipment, generator replacements, instrumentation, controls, testing, and plant operations.
- The electrical scope began with demolition and disconnection of the existing electrical systems serving equipment designated for replacement.
- BRE identified, isolated, disconnected, and removed designated conduit, conductors, lighting, boxes, devices, equipment connections, switches, and electrical components associated with the existing clarifiers, chemical-feed systems, MCC equipment, generators, and related plant systems.
- Existing electrical systems designated to remain were protected throughout construction.
Project Description
The project included the rehabilitation of two existing circular solids-contact clarifiers, including removal and replacement of mechanical equipment, concrete-tank repairs, concrete resurfacing, crack and spall repairs, protective coatings, structural metals, access systems, and electrical equipment.
JCC installed complete replacement clarifier components, including center-support columns, draft tubes, center-drive platforms, drive units, flocculation assemblies, conical baffle walls, rotating sludge-scraper assemblies, effluent launders, sample piping, and access walkways.
