Key Accomplishments

Johnston Construction Company

  • JCC constructed and coordinated the pile-supported foundation system required for the new elevated tank, with Hollywood foundation earthwork specifically designed around augered pressure-grouted piles in accordance with the project geotechnical recommendations.
  • Incorporated augered piles recommended at approximately 16 inches in diameter, extending to a minimum tip elevation of +71 feet, with a design compression capacity of 150 kips per pile.
  • Coordinated the required pile-installation plan, quality-control procedures and static pile load testing prior to installation of production piles. The project specifications required load testing in accordance with ASTM D1143 and Engineer approval before production pile installation.
  • Constructed the structural tank foundation in coordination with Caldwell’s final tank-foundation design, anchor-bolt requirements and subsequent pedestal erection.
  • JCC performed the Hollywood base-bid piping and sitework, including water-main installation and associated valves, hydrants and utility appurtenances.
  • Installed approximately 390 LF of 12-inch water main and approximately 120 LF of 6-inch water main as identified in the Hollywood base-bid quantities.
  • Furnished and installed three 12-inch gate valves as part of the new water-distribution infrastructure.
  • Furnished and installed three fire hydrants and the associated piping and appurtenances serving the Hollywood site.
  • JCC installed twin 4-inch PVC electrical service conduits and associated pull boxes between the utility-service point and the Hollywood site, providing underground electrical infrastructure for the new water-storage facility. The contract bid schedule identified approximately 1,800 LF of twin 4-inch service conduits.
  • Coordinated water-main installation, testing, chlorination and connections while maintaining operation of the existing water-distribution system.
  • Performed applicable mechanical piping and valve work within the Hollywood Water Station supporting the new tank and well systems.
  • JCC provided applicable electrical and instrumentation infrastructure associated with the Hollywood Water Station, whose systems included electrical service, distribution equipment, lighting, pump controls, metering, standby power and telemetry.

Concrete Services Division

  • Performed the forming, concrete placement, finishing and curing work required for the tank foundation in accordance with the project drawings, Caldwell tank-foundation requirements and applicable MetCom concrete specifications.
  • CSD completed approximately 973.5 square feet of concrete formwork, including footing forms, slab-on-grade forms and the curved-wall forming system required for the tank foundation.
  • Constructed approximately 604.8 square feet of curved-wall formwork, representing the largest single formwork component of CSD’s subcontract.
  • Furnished and installed approximately 284.8 square feet of slab-on-grade formwork and approximately 84 square feet of footing formwork.
  • Placed approximately 110.7 cubic yards of concrete across the footing, slab-on-grade and curved-wall portions of the foundation.
  • Performed approximately 78.4 cubic yards of curved-wall concrete placement, together with footing and slab-on-grade placements necessary to complete the structural foundation.
  • CSD completed approximately 1,817.5 square feet of concrete finishing, using multiple finishing methods appropriate to the various foundation surfaces.
  • Performed approximately 839.5 square feet of float/screed finishing, approximately 330.1 square feet of machine-trowel finishing, approximately 604.8 square feet of point-and-patch finishing, and localized bag finishing.
  • Performed approximately 2,143 square feet of concrete curing work following placement and finishing operations.
  • Furnished the labor and supplies associated with concrete curing as part of CSD’s specialized foundation scope.
  • CSD performed concrete accessory labor associated with vapor barrier, premolded joints, saw-cut joints and joint sealing.
  • Installed approximately 330 square feet of vapor barrier, approximately 32 square feet of premolded joint, approximately 41 LF of saw-cut joints and approximately 105 LF of joint sealing within the foundation work.
  • Provided rebar unloading and handling labor associated with approximately 6.06 tons of reinforcing steel, while reinforcing-steel placement and related placement supplies remained outside CSD’s subcontract responsibility.
  • CSD constructed six concrete equipment-support pads, consisting of four equipment pads and two pipe pads, for mechanical and utility components associated with the completed water-storage facility.
