Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- JCC’s scope included civil site work, water main construction, jack-and-bore utility crossings, electrical service, instrumentation and controls, telemetry coordination, controller modification support at existing Well House No. 1, site improvements, stormwater improvements, erosion and sediment controls, maintenance of traffic, testing support, and closeout documentation.
- Major utility work included 10-inch and 12-inch water main construction across and along both sides of Route 13, including valves, hydrants, fittings, and appurtenances.
- The project included five parallel 24-inch casing pipes installed by jack-and-bore across Route 13, with one casing dedicated to the 12-inch water main crossing and four casing pipes capped for future utility crossings.
- Site improvements included site entrance, access driveway, grading, stormwater infiltration basin, grass surface, fencing, sliding gate, erosion and sediment controls, and restoration.
- The overall project consisted of construction of a new 750,000-gallon spherical single-pedestal elevated water storage tank at 5495 DuPont Parkway in Smyrna, Delaware. The project also included SCADA and controls tie-in work at the existing Well House No. 1 site located at 7 S. High Street in Smyrna.
- JCC’s civil scope included mobilization, site preparation, excavation, grading, erosion and sediment control, maintenance of traffic, stormwater improvements, site entrance construction, access driveway construction, fencing, sliding gate installation, grass surface restoration, and overall site improvements required to support the new elevated water storage tank facility.
- Water main work included construction of new 10-inch and 12-inch water mains across and along both sides of Route 13. The work connected the new tank facility to the Town’s existing water system and included valves, hydrants, fittings, appurtenances, tie-ins, testing, and restoration.
- The Route 13 utility crossing work included jack-and-bore construction for 24-inch casing pipes. JCC’s scope included casing installation, 12-inch water main installation through the casing, and coordination of four additional capped casing pipes reserved for future utility crossings.
- The project also included controller modification at the existing Well House No. 1 to support SCADA tie-in and remote monitoring requirements for the new elevated water storage tank.
- JCC coordinated construction activities with the Town of Smyrna, CB&I Storage Solutions LLC, KCI Technologies, inspectors, testing agencies, utility providers, subcontractors, suppliers, and Route 13 traffic control requirements.
- The contract documents required completion within 425 consecutive calendar days from the Notice to Proceed.
Concrete Services Division
- Concrete Services Division, LLC performed the specialized concrete work associated with the new 750,000-gallon North Duck Creek Elevated Water Storage Tank in Smyrna, Delaware.
- CSD furnished the labor, materials, tools, formwork resources, finishing supplies, curing materials, concrete accessories, and associated field support required for the tank-foundation concrete package.
- CSD’s scope included concrete work for the tank foundation, floor slabs, pipe pads, splash pads, equipment pads, supports, and anchor-bolt installation.
- The concrete package included slab-on-grade and curved-wall forming, concrete placement, floating and screeding, machine-trowel finishing, pointing and patching, bag finishing, curing, sawcut joints, joint sealing, and associated concrete accessories.
- CSD’s billing quantities included approximately 103 cubic yards of concrete, 170 square feet of slab-on-grade forming, 725.71 square feet of curved-wall forming, 83.99 cubic yards of wall concrete placement, and 18.80 cubic yards of slab-on-grade placement.
- The concrete-accessory work included sawcut joints, joint sealing, curing materials, waterstop, premolded joint material, caulking, and related concrete-interface work.
- CSD also provided reinforcing-related labor when required, installed dowels, and set anchor bolts in coordination with the tank-foundation construction.
- CSD coordinated ready-mixed concrete purchased by JCC, concrete-pumping services, testing-laboratory activities, JCC equipment, and other construction resources required during placement operations.
- The concrete work supported a new single-pedestal spheroidal elevated water-storage tank designed to provide up to 750,000 gallons of storage for the Town of Smyrna’s expanding water-distribution system.
- Concrete Services Division, LLC performed the concrete-foundation portion of the North Duck Creek 750,000-Gallon Elevated Water Storage Tank project at 5495 DuPont Parkway, Smyrna, Delaware 19977.
- The project involved construction of the Town of Smyrna’s new North Duck Creek Water Tower, including a new 750,000-gallon spherical single-pedestal elevated water tank and its associated foundation, electrical and instrumentation systems, piping, site improvements, access road, fencing, stormwater facilities, and related infrastructure.
- The new elevated water-storage facility was developed as part of the Town of Smyrna’s water-system expansion.
- The project’s geotechnical documents explain that the Town identified a need for additional elevated water storage to help meet future water demands. Elevated storage also supports water-system pressure and provides stored water to meet customer demand within the distribution network.
- The proposed tank is a proprietary single-pedestal spheroid-shaped structure with storage capacity of up to 750,000 gallons, or 0.75 million gallons.
Electrical Services Division
- Electrical Services Division performed the electrical construction associated with the new 750,000-gallon North Duck Creek Elevated Water Storage Tank in Smyrna, Delaware.
- ESD furnished the labor, materials, tools, electrical equipment, and field resources necessary to complete its assigned electrical package in accordance with Division 26 electrical specifications and the project electrical and instrumentation drawings.
