Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- Furnished the required construction layout and surveying necessary to establish JCC's civil and mechanical work.
- Installed and maintained the required erosion and sediment-control measures, including coordination with the appropriate regulatory agencies throughout the construction period.
- Performed access-road demolition, clearing, grading and general site preparation associated with construction of the replacement tank.
- Constructed the new tank's spread-footing foundation in accordance with the tank manufacturer's foundation requirements.
- Prepared the tank construction area in accordance with the specified minimum site-preparation requirements, including installation of required hoist deadman facilities and foundation guyline anchors.
- Constructed the concrete floor and pipe supports inside the base of the new tank.
- Maintained the construction area at the required grades following excavation and established drainage away from the tank foundation.
- Coordinated existing utility locations before excavation and construction activities.
- Provided concrete testing, soils testing and subgrade-bearing inspection, together with the associated testing documentation and reports.
- Furnished and installed the required floor-drain piping within JCC's mechanical scope.
- Furnished and installed the tank's overhead door and personnel-access door.
- Furnished and installed the project's major water-distribution piping, valves, fittings, hydrants, supports and thrust blocks, beginning at the limits of the 16-inch water main at Buehler Road and extending toward the new elevated tank.
Concrete Services Division
- Performed the specialized structural concrete package supporting construction of the Olney replacement elevated water storage facility.
- Provided forming and concrete-placement work for the tank foundation, derrick slab, tank slab and Altitude Valve Vault, including the vault slab, walls, top slab, pipe pads and fill concrete.
- Supported WSSC's larger Olney Standpipe Replacement project, which included construction of a new 1.5-million-gallon elevated water storage tank, associated piping, valves, vaults, access improvements and eventual demolition of the existing standpipe.
- Mobilized and demobilized the concrete construction equipment, tools and supplies required to execute CSD's work.
- Provided the required form-material rental and form lumber for CSD's concrete operations.
- Installed and stripped structural formwork for the various concrete elements included in the subcontract.
- Constructed formwork for concrete footings, establishing the geometry required for the tank-foundation system.
- Constructed slab-on-grade formwork associated with the tank and supporting structures.
- Constructed both curved-wall and straight-wall formwork, accommodating the different structural geometries required by the tank-foundation and valve-vault systems.
- Constructed supported-slab formwork for elevated or structurally supported concrete elements.
- Performed concrete-placement labor for footings, slabs on grade, walls and supported slabs.
- Performed placement of grout and fill concrete associated with the completed structural-concrete work.
- Completed concrete finishing using float and screed operations to establish the required elevations, surfaces and profiles.
- Performed machine-trowel finishing where required for finished concrete surfaces.
Project Description
Performed the comprehensive civil and mechanical construction package supporting WSSC's Olney Standpipe Replacement project.
Supported construction of a new 1.5-million-gallon elevated water storage tank designed with a high-capacity water elevation of 660 feet above mean sea level and a 40-foot operating range. The overall WSSC project included the new tank, sitework, inlet and outlet piping, valves, vaults, access road, drainage and demolition of the existing standpipe.
