Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- Johnston Construction Company performed foundation and site support work for the Pendleton Elevated Water Storage Tank project in Ladysmith, Virginia. The overall project included construction of a new 500,000-gallon spheroidal welded steel elevated water storage tank and H-pile foundation for Tricord, Inc. in Caroline County, Virginia.
- JCC’s scope was performed under subcontract to Caldwell Tanks, Inc. and included work required to support installation of the tank foundation and related foundation-area improvements. The work included erosion and sediment control for the excavated tank foundation area, with measures to maintain positive drainage and help avoid saturation of subgrades during construction.
- The project required close coordination with the tank contractor, engineer, geotechnical representatives, and other project participants. JCC coordinated staking requirements, maintained and protected staking provided by the Engineer, supported pile layout, assisted the pile subcontractor as needed, and coordinated geotechnical inspections and documentation associated with pile installation.
- JCC’s work also included construction support for the foundation in accordance with Caldwell’s issued-for-construction foundation design, including installation of supplied ground rods. Additional coordination included owner and electrical conduit installation requirements, underground piping, electrical, valves, and other items necessary to complete the foundation design.
- As part of the foundation and site support scope, JCC coordinated and installed the tank steel door, installed splash pad and drainage ditch work as required around the foundation, and provided crushed stone required to complete the crane pad areas. JCC also performed dirt removal, site cleanup, and final rough grading associated with the foundation work.
- Before demobilization, JCC was responsible for leaving the site accessible for semi-trailers and concrete trucks, removing trash from the project site, and keeping stored materials and spoils at the required distance from the foundation. The work also included punch list items required by the Owner, Engineer, and Caldwell Tanks until the work was accepted as complete.
- Through this work, Johnston Construction Company supported successful construction of the Pendleton Elevated Water Storage Tank by providing the foundation-area construction, coordination, grading, access, and closeout support required for the new 500,000-gallon elevated water storage facility.
Concrete Services Division
- Performed concrete forming, placement, finishing, and curing for the tank foundation and floor slab of a new 500,000-gallon elevated water storage tank.
- Supported construction of the elevated water tank foundation through footing, curved wall, column, slab-on-grade, concrete accessories, and curing work.
- Coordinated concrete, testing lab services, concrete pumping services, rental equipment, and jobsite concrete support with Johnston Construction Company.
- Concrete Services Division, LLC performed the concrete construction scope for the Pendleton Elevated Water Storage Tank project in Ruther Glen, Virginia. The overall project included construction of a new 500,000-gallon spheroidal welded steel elevated water storage tank and H-pile foundation in Caroline County, Virginia.
- CSD’s scope included furnishing labor, materials, and tools necessary for forming and concrete placement of the tank foundation and floor slab in accordance with the project contract documents, Drawing Nos. C-1, C-10, and C-11, Specification Sections 01400 General Conditions, 01500 Supplementary Conditions, 02200 Earthwork, 03300 Cast-in-Place Concrete, and 11150 Spheroid Elevated Water Tank, along with the CSD control estimate and Caldwell foundation drawings.
- The concrete work included forming, placing, finishing, and curing associated with the tank foundation and floor slab. CSD’s scope included mobilization and demobilization of concrete equipment, tools, and supplies; rental of form material; purchase of form lumber; installation and stripping of forms; concrete placement labor; concrete finishing labor and supplies; curing labor and supplies; and concrete accessory labor including items such as PMJ, waterstop, caulk, and related concrete accessories.
- CSD also supported specialized foundation work items including footing formwork, curved wall formwork, column formwork, footing placement, slab-on-grade placement, wall placement, column placement, float and screed work, trowel finishing, point and patch work, bagging, curing, and accessories. This work supported the concrete foundation system required for the new elevated water storage tank structure.
- As part of the project, CSD coordinated concrete purchased by Johnston Construction Company, testing lab services paid for by JCC, concrete pumping services paid for by JCC, and rental of JCC and outside equipment. CSD also included winter protection labor, resteel placing labor and supplies on a time-and-material basis to JCC, unloading rebar labor on a time-and-material basis to JCC, and setting anchor bolts and sleeves on a time-and-material basis to JCC.
- Through this work, Concrete Services Division supported Johnston Construction Company’s construction of the Pendleton Elevated Water Storage Tank by providing the forming, placement, finishing, curing, accessory installation, and coordination required for the concrete tank foundation and floor slab.
