Key Accomplishments

Johnston Construction Company

  • The tank structure was rotated approximately 30 degrees and installed on new reinforced-concrete foundations.
  • The deteriorated existing tank foundations were removed and replaced to support the modified and elevated structure.
  • Existing tank appurtenances were extended to accommodate the increased tank height, including the eight-inch overflow pipe and eight-inch inlet and outlet piping.
  • The dry center-riser ladder and its associated safety-climbing system were extended as part of the structural modifications.
  • The project included erosion and sediment controls, excavation, temporary work areas, electrical modifications, painting of new and disturbed steel surfaces, testing, disinfection, cleanup, and restoration.
  • Construction required close coordination with Pittsburg Tank & Tower, the Dallastown-Yoe Water Authority, the Engineer, utility personnel, and the owners of communications equipment mounted on the tank.
  • Johnston Construction Company participated in the Raising of Denton Elevated Water Storage Tank project in York Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
  • The project involved extensive modifications to the existing Denton elevated water-storage tank located off Denton Drive.
  • The existing structure was a six-legged, 500,000-gallon elevated steel water tank originally constructed in 1981 by Universal Tank & Iron Works, Inc.
  • The project was undertaken because the existing concrete foundations had deteriorated and the Authority required the tank’s operating elevation to be increased.
  • The project documents required the existing tank to be raised approximately 32.4 feet, increasing the overflow elevation by the same amount.
  • The tank was also rotated approximately 30 degrees before being secured to the new foundation system.

Concrete Services Division

  • Concrete Services Division, LLC performed the concrete construction supporting the raising of the existing 500,000-gallon Denton Elevated Water Storage Tank.
  • CSD constructed six perimeter tank foundations and one center-column foundation for the modified tank structure.
  • The work included footing, straight-wall, column, supported-slab, slab-on-grade, and boxout formwork.
  • CSD placed approximately 112 cubic yards of concrete across the new foundation and splash-pad construction.
  • Reinforcing-steel placement included approximately 5.63 tons of rebar, along with welded-wire mesh and associated placement supplies.
  • CSD set 42 anchor bolts required to connect the raised tank structure to the new foundation system.
  • The company performed floating, screeding, finishing, point-and-patch work, curing, and concrete-accessory installation.
  • CSD coordinated concrete deliveries, testing, pumping, reinforcing-steel handling, winter protection, and construction equipment provided or paid for by JCC.
  • Concrete Services Division, LLC performed the concrete portion of the Raising of Denton Elevated Water Storage Tank project in York Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
  • The overall project involved raising the height of the existing 500,000-gallon elevated steel water-storage tank located off Denton Drive. The tank structure was modified and placed on a new foundation system designed to support the raised configuration.
  • Johnston Construction Company served as the contractor, and Concrete Services Division, LLC performed the foundation forming, reinforcing, concrete-placement, finishing, curing, and anchor-bolt work as JCC’s concrete subcontractor.
  • The subcontract required CSD to furnish the labor, materials, tools, supplies, and supervision necessary to complete the forming and concrete placement for six perimeter tank foundations, one center-column foundation, and the associated splash pad.
  • The concrete work was coordinated with the approved tank-foundation drawings, including Foundation Drawings F-01 through F-04, and the applicable technical specifications.
  • CSD mobilized the concrete tools, formwork materials, lumber, finishing supplies, reinforcing-steel placement materials, curing supplies, and other equipment required for the work.

Electrical Services Division

  • Electrical Services Division, LLC performed the electrical construction work associated with raising the existing 500,000-gallon Denton Elevated Water Storage Tank.
  • ESD furnished and installed conduit, conductors, and connections serving the tank-lighting circuit, remote terminal unit, and overflow switch.
  • The existing lighting circuit was extended to accommodate the increased height of the elevated tank.
  • Three additional lighting fixtures were installed within the tank structure to improve illumination for inspection and maintenance.
  • ESD furnished and installed a new heat-tracing line serving the modified tank-piping system.
  • Electrical duct-bank provisions were relocated where required to avoid conflicts with the new tank foundations.
  • The electrical work was coordinated with the tank raising, structural-leg extensions, piping modifications, new foundations, ladders, handrails, and equipment furnished by others.
  • ESD supported electrical inspections, testing, startup, final documentation, and preparation of as-built record drawings.
  • Electrical Services Division, LLC performed the electrical portion of the Raising of Denton Elevated Water Storage Tank project in York Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
  • The project involved raising the existing 500,000-gallon elevated steel water-storage tank located off Denton Drive. The overall construction included modifications to the tank’s supporting structure, new concrete foundations, extensions to tank piping and access systems, painting, disinfection, testing, and restoration.
  • Johnston Construction Company served as the contractor for the work assigned under its agreement with the Dallastown-Yoe Water Authority, and Electrical Services Division, LLC performed the electrical improvements as JCC’s electrical subcontractor.
  • The tank-raising project required modifications to existing electrical systems because the tank structure, piping, lighting, controls, and associated connections were being extended above their original elevations.
  • ESD coordinated its work with JCC, the tank contractor, the Owner, the Engineer, and the other project participants.
  • Electrical activities had to be sequenced around foundation construction, tank lifting, structural modifications, piping extensions, ladder and handrail installation, painting, and the final return of the tank to service.
