Key Accomplishments

Johnston Construction Company

  • Performed the civil and mechanical construction package supporting the replacement of the existing Shady Grove Standpipe with a new elevated water storage facility.
  • Completed required site layout and surveying, construction coordination, erosion and sediment controls, tree removal/protection, traffic coordination, clearing, grading and general site preparation.
  • Constructed the new tank's deep H-pile foundation system, with the subcontract based on approximately 142 H-piles totaling an estimated 8,520 linear feet, together with required pile installation coordination and foundation preparation.
  • Supported foundation quality verification through static pile load testing, PDA testing, concrete testing, soil testing and subgrade bearing inspection, including preparation of required reports.
  • Constructed the communications tower foundation, consisting of three approximately 60-inch-diameter caissons based on a design depth of 34 feet, and completed associated civil work and foundation testing. Tower fabrication, erection and associated cable work were by others.
  • Prepared the work area for elevated tank construction in accordance with the project site-preparation requirements, including installation of hoist deadman components and CB&I-supplied foundation guyline anchors.
  • Installed the concrete floor and pipe supports within the tank base and completed related civil improvements necessary for the tank construction package.
  • Furnished and installed extensive water piping, valves, fittings, hydrants, pipe supports and thrust blocks, including work extending to tie-ins with the existing 36-inch and 60-inch PCCP water mains and to the ductile-iron-to-stainless-steel transition at the tank riser.
  • Furnished the overflow bypass piping and gate valve and performed significant valve-vault construction, including the altitude valve vault, entry port valve vault and installation of isolation valve vaults A, B and C.
  • Installed Trenwa trench boxes, drain piping, drain manholes, bollards and related civil/mechanical site components required for the completed facility.
  • Supported the electrical and instrumentation trades by providing required excavation and backfill and completing the civil portions of electrical ductbanks, including excavation, reinforcement, concrete and backfill. Electrical conduit and primary electrical/instrumentation work were by others.
  • Furnished and installed instrumentation-associated piping and tubing and mechanical equipment within JCC's scope, including motor-operated valves and mechanical items, fans, unit heaters and sump pump components.
  • Completed temporary fencing, permanent-fence coordination, landscaping, planting, final grading and preparation of the access-road subbase for subsequent paving.
  • Performed partial demolition of existing valve vaults and the existing tank inlet structure, including removal of piping and valves under environmental supervision. Demolition of the existing standpipe itself was specifically performed by others.

Concrete Services Division

  • Served as the concrete trade subcontractor to Johnston Construction Company for the Shady Grove Standpipe Replacement project.
  • Furnished the labor, tools, supervision, forming systems and concrete-placement services required for CSD's structural concrete scope.
  • Performed concrete forming and placement associated with the new elevated water-storage tank's foundation system.
  • Formed and placed concrete for the tank foundation, supporting the construction of the new 3.0-million-gallon elevated water storage facility.
  • Performed concrete work for the derrick slab and tank slab associated with the elevated tank structure.
  • Constructed concrete components associated with the project's level spreader.
  • Formed and placed the concrete curb at the facility entrance.
  • Constructed concrete ice-bridge footings required by the project.
  • Performed forming and concrete-placement work associated with the altitude valve vault.
  • Performed forming and concrete-placement work for the entry port valve vault.
  • Constructed concrete slabs, walls and top slabs serving the project's vault and structural systems.
  • Formed concrete footings and coordinated placement of footing concrete.
  • Formed and placed slab-on-grade concrete.
  • Constructed both curved concrete walls and straight concrete walls.
