Key Accomplishments
- JCC’s scope included construction coordination, temporary pumping, demolition, protection of existing facilities, excavation, backfilling, trenching, compaction, concrete, miscellaneous fabrications, painting, mechanical equipment, electrical systems, controls integration, testing, startup, and closeout.
- Major equipment and systems included multi-stage centrifugal pumps, inside process piping, inside process valves, supports and anchors, motors, terminal heat transfer units, power ventilators, ductwork, HVAC controls, electrical work, generator system, transfer switch, panelboards, PLCs, control panels, instrumentation, variable frequency drives, gas detection, and PCS programming.
- The project required maintaining operations at an existing wastewater facility while coordinating temporary pumping, equipment replacement, electrical upgrades, controls integration, testing, startup, and final turnover.
- Johnston Construction Company completed the Solomons Island Headworks Pumping Station Upgrade for Calvert County Government. The project was performed under Contract 2020-025 for the Board of County Commissioners of Calvert County, Maryland.
- The work consisted of upgrades to the existing headworks pumping station, including construction, equipment replacement, temporary pumping, mechanical improvements, electrical improvements, controls and instrumentation, HVAC, site work, and final restoration.
- JCC coordinated the overall construction effort, including submittals, scheduling, temporary facilities, construction documentation, quality control, record documents, protection of existing facilities, safety, utility coordination, demolition, temporary pumping, and startup.
- A major part of the project included temporary pumping to maintain service while the pumping station upgrades were completed. Temporary pumping work included coordination of pumping operations, temporary piping, bypass setup, pump operation, and removal after the station improvements were completed and placed into service.
- The project included demolition and removal work, removal of water, protection of existing facilities, excavation, trenching, backfilling, compaction, hot mix asphalt, testing of pressure piping, and site rehabilitation. JCC coordinated site restoration and cleanup after completion of the pumping station improvements.
- Structural and architectural work included concrete, miscellaneous fabrications, concrete anchors, guardrail and handrail, painting, plastic and fiberglass signs, and related appurtenances required to complete the station upgrades.
- Mechanical and process work included pumping equipment, multi-stage centrifugal pumps, inside process piping, inside process valves, supports and anchors, motors, terminal heat transfer units, power ventilators, ductwork, ductwork accessories, air outlets and inlets, HVAC controls and sequence of operation, and testing, adjusting, and balancing.
- Electrical and controls work included electrical work, electrical demolition, removals and relocation, grounding, electrical supports, anchors and fasteners, utility service entrance, panelboards, enclosed delayed-transition transfer switch, packaged engine generator system, electrical testing and inspection, control systems integration, programmable logic controllers, input/output tables, control panels, instrumentation, variable frequency drives, gas detection, and PCS programming.
- The work required careful coordination with Calvert County operations to maintain service, protect existing facilities, sequence temporary pumping, complete equipment replacement, integrate new electrical and control systems, and test the completed improvements before final turnover.
