Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- The project included construction of a new below-grade wastewater pumping station and connection to existing force mains and utilities.
- Major work included wet well excavation with shoring, excavation dewatering, stone and mud mats below the wet well and pipe vault room slabs, generator pad preparation, and permanent support of excavation below the pipe room.
- Electrical and startup work included emergency generator, service entrance rated automatic transfer switch, pump station power and controls, conduit and wiring, lighting and receptacles, grounding, lightning protection, RVSS pump starters, and related electrical systems.
- The work required coordination with the local electrical utility for new transformer, new service and/or service upgrades, along with temporary bypass or pump-and-haul planning for shutdowns of the existing temporary pump facility.
- Johnston Construction Company completed Work Agreement A for the St. Charles Communities Pumping Station 8 project in Charles County, Maryland. The project was part of the Stonehaven Neighborhood within the Village of Wooded Glen and was designed by Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP.
- JCC’s work supported construction of a new below-grade wastewater pumping station. The scope included mobilization, bonds, insurance, submittals, excavation and shoring, electrical and startup work, builder’s risk insurance, coordination with local electrical utility providers, field investigations, and coordination with the Owner and Engineer.
- The work included excavation and backfill for the below-grade pump station, including wet well excavation with shoring, excavation dewatering, stone and mud mats below the wet well and pipe vault room slabs, and stone below the generator pad. The excavation scope required careful planning because the support of excavation installed below the pipe room was permanent and had to remain in place.
- JCC coordinated electrical and startup work for the pump station, including emergency generator and service entrance rated automatic transfer switch, secondary service conduits from the onsite transformer, primary conduits stubbed out from the transformer, pump station power and control conduit and wiring, lights and receptacles, grounding, lightning protection, RVSS pump starters, and underground conduit encasement where shown.
- The project also required coordination with the existing submersible Temporary Pump Facility located in MH-1A. Shutdowns that could not be completed during low flow periods or kept under four hours required temporary bypass pumping or pump-and-haul due to limited wet well storage.
- JCC worked with St. Charles Community, LLC, Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP, Concrete Services Division, LLC, Charles County, utility providers, and project subcontractors to coordinate excavation, electrical systems, startup, testing, training, and commissioning activities for the new pumping station.
- The Project Was Completed On 31st March, 2025
Concrete Services Division
