Key Accomplishments

Johnston Construction Company

  • Installed pipework penetrating the clearwell slab and extending approximately five feet beyond the foundation.
  • Coordinated installation of valves, plugs and related water-piping appurtenances.
  • Supplied the crane and rigging required to set the clearwell tank.
  • Coordinated tank setting activities with the tank manufacturer during installation.
  • Performed surveying and layout necessary to establish the correct clearwell location and elevations.
  • Installed the clearwell complete in place in accordance with the project plans, specifications and approved shop drawings.
  • Managed trench support, dewatering, pipe bedding and backfill compaction associated with the underground work.
  • Johnston Construction Company served as the Prime Contractor for the Sussex Shores Water Company Clearwell 2-2 Installation project. The project involved construction of the foundation and installation of a new 50,000-gallon clearwell, including the associated earthwork. The project plans were prepared by Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP.
  • JCC’s work included installation of the pipework penetrating the clearwell slab and extending approximately five feet beyond the foundation. This scope included coordination of valves and plugs intended to protect the valves from dirt and debris during construction. JCC was also responsible for supplying the crane and rigging and setting the tank in coordination with the tank manufacturer, as well as performing the surveying necessary to establish the proper location and elevations.
  • The earthwork portion of the project included excavation, protection and refilling of excavations and disposal of excess excavated material associated with the water-main and related work. JCC was also responsible for maintaining excavations free of water through appropriate pumping, drainage or other dewatering measures.
  • Pipeline trenches were excavated to the required widths, depths and grades to provide continuous support for the piping. The specifications also required appropriate trench bracing or sheeting where necessary and controlled backfilling following completion of underground installation.
  • Backfill around the pipelines was required to meet the specified Delaware material requirements. Within road rights-of-way, backfill was mechanically compacted in controlled layers to the specified density, while other trench areas required layered placement and compaction around and above the piping.
