Key Accomplishments

Johnston Construction Company

  • JCC’s scope included construction coordination, demolition, temporary bypass pumping, mechanical process equipment replacement, piping, valves, building modifications, sitework, paving, landscaping, startup, testing, training, and closeout.
  • Major work included removal and replacement of pumping station equipment, construction of a new bypass connection vault, tapping valve connection into the station force main, and modifications to the station building, foundation, access stairs, doors, and wall openings.
  • The work required temporary bypass pumping to allow the pumping station to be removed from service while station equipment replacements and building modifications were completed.
  • Johnston Construction Company completed the Swan Creek Wastewater Pumping Station Upgrades project for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission at 522 W. Tantallon Drive in Fort Washington, Maryland.
  • The project consisted of upgrades to an existing wastewater pumping station, including demolition and replacement of station mechanical process equipment, ventilation equipment, heating equipment, electrical power equipment, instrumentation and control systems, structural and building modifications, temporary bypass pumping, and site restoration.
  • JCC coordinated the overall construction effort, including project scheduling, submittals, demolition, temporary facilities, erosion and sediment controls, bypass pumping, site access, equipment installation, testing, startup, owner training, O&M manuals, record drawings, and final closeout.
  • A major component of the work included temporary bypass pumping to allow Swan Creek WWPS to be removed from service while demolition, process equipment replacement, electrical work, instrumentation work, and building modifications were performed. The bypass system was required before demolition or construction activities could occur inside the pumping station building.
  • The work included construction of a new bypass connection vault housing a tapping valve connection into the station force main. JCC coordinated excavation, force main exposure, testing support, tapping sleeve and valve installation, thrust block work, vault construction, bypass system connection, and final vault completion after the bypass system was removed.
  • The project also included sitework and restoration, including paving, landscaping, lawns and grasses, exterior plants, temporary erosion and sediment control, utility protection, traffic control, and restoration of areas disturbed by construction.
  • JCC coordinated mechanical process work including submersible dry pit non-clog wastewater pumping units, influent sewage grinder, miscellaneous valves, check valves, plug valves, surge relief valves, pipe and pipe fittings, pipe supports, pipe insulation, plumbing, sump pumps, ventilation fans, ductwork, electric unit heaters, carbon adsorption odor control system, and related appurtenances.
  • The project required extensive coordination with WSSC operations, PEPCO, inspectors, subcontractors, manufacturers, and multiple trades to maintain access, protect existing utilities, sequence outages, complete bypass pumping, integrate new equipment, and return the pumping station to automatic operation.
  • The station was required to complete startup and testing, including a 30-day station startup period with the station placed in automatic operation conveying sewage through the facility.

Concrete Services Division

  • Concrete Services Division, LLC performed concrete forming and concrete placement work for the Swan Creek Wastewater Pumping Station Upgrades project in Fort Washington, Maryland.
  • The project included concrete support for major wastewater pumping station upgrades, including mechanical process equipment replacement, building modifications, foundation modifications, access improvements, and bypass connection vault work.
  • CSD’s scope included forming, placing, finishing, and curing concrete for new slabs, curb, wall openings, wall infill, pipe supports, equipment pads, structural steel foundations, stair landing pad, and pipe support foundations.
  • Major concrete work included forming and placing concrete at the station building, exterior wall openings, existing structural openings, equipment support areas, pipe support locations, and bypass-related structures.
  • CSD furnished labor, materials, tools, equipment, forming, placement, finishing, curing, concrete accessories, reinforcing steel support, dowels, embeds, anchor bolts, and related concrete coordination.
  • The work required coordination with Johnston Construction Company, WSSC, concrete suppliers, reinforcing steel suppliers, concrete pumping services, testing personnel, bypass pumping operations, and overall pumping station upgrade sequencing.
  • Concrete Services Division, LLC performed the concrete subcontract scope for the Swan Creek Wastewater Pumping Station Upgrades project in Fort Washington, Maryland. The work was completed under subcontract to Johnston Construction Company for Job No. 2019-05.
  • CSD’s concrete scope included furnishing labor, materials, tools, and equipment necessary to form and place concrete in accordance with the subcontract documents, contract documents, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Concrete work included forming and placing sloped walls, curb, slabs, wall infill, concrete to wall pipes, concrete equipment pads, structural steel foundations, stair landing pads, and pipe supports. CSD’s scope also included forming and placing concrete where wall openings and structural modifications were required to support new equipment access and operation.
  • CSD performed concrete forming, placing, finishing, and curing for the bypass connection vault support work and related pumping station improvements. This work supported the project requirement for a new bypass connection vault housing a tapping valve connection into the station force main.
  • The scope included concrete finishing, concrete curing, installation and stripping of forms, purchase of form lumber, finishing concrete slabs, concrete accessory installation, waterstop-related coordination, reinforcing steel support, dowel installation, anchor bolt coordination, sleeves, embeds, and related concrete items.
  • CSD coordinated concrete work around existing wastewater pumping station operations and the temporary bypass pumping sequence required to remove the station from service for equipment replacement and building modifications.
  • The project required coordination around demolition and replacement of station process, ventilation, heating, electrical, instrumentation, and control systems. CSD’s concrete work supported installation of new equipment, structural modifications, and final restoration of the pumping station facility.
  • CSD coordinated with Johnston Construction Company for concrete material, concrete testing, concrete pump services, excavation and backfill support, crane support, outside equipment, jobsite access, unloading of materials, and overall project sequencing.
