Key Accomplishments
Johnston Construction Company
- JCC furnished and installed reinforced cast-in-place concrete and reinforcing steel associated with the tank foundation ringwalls.
- Installed CB&I-supplied anchor straps within the tank foundations in accordance with project setting plans and tolerances.
- Furnished, placed, and compacted structural fill within the ringwalls, including controlled placement and field-density verification.
- JCC installed the non-oiled sand cushion system within the tank foundations, including placement in controlled lifts and compaction to specified density requirements.
- Installed PVC sleeves through the concrete ringwalls and conduit associated with the foundation heating system within the sand layer.
- Constructed a concrete leveling pad above the CB&I-installed foam-glass insulation, integrating the civil foundation work with the specialized low-temperature tank foundation system.
- Performed excavation, dewatering, unsuitable-soil removal, backfill, grading, compaction, and preparation of foundation bearing surfaces.
- JCC coordinated geotechnical inspection and testing to verify suitable bearing conditions before placement of concrete and structural backfill.
- Structural backfill in critical ringwall areas was placed in controlled lifts and compacted to project requirements, including 95% Modified Proctor criteria.
- Coordinated concrete mix designs, reinforcing-steel submittals, strength testing, density testing, and other quality-control documentation required for the completed foundation systems.
- Johnston Construction Company performed the civil foundation construction for two large refrigerated liquid-gas storage tanks at the Utica East Ohio Midstream facility in Scio, Ohio. JCC worked as Civil Subcontractor to Chicago Bridge & Iron Company for foundations supporting one 200,000-barrel propane tank and one 125,000-barrel butane tank.
- The propane storage tank measured approximately 118 feet in diameter and 109.08 feet high, while the butane tank measured approximately 94 feet in diameter and 105.08 feet high. The foundation package incorporated earthwork, reinforced concrete construction, structural fill, non-oiled sand cushions, anchor systems, and specialized provisions associated with the low-temperature storage-tank foundations.
Electrical Services Division
- Electrical Services Division, LLC performed the specialized electrical installation associated with the foundation systems for a 200,000-barrel propane storage tank and 125,000-barrel butane storage tank at the Utica East Ohio Midstream facility in Scio, Ohio.
- Installed the electrical infrastructure serving the foundation heating systems for both refrigerated-storage tank foundations.
- ESD installed heat-trace cable and terminations associated with the tank foundation heating system.
- Installed RTD cabling and terminations to support foundation temperature monitoring.
- Installed conduit and terminations serving the foundation heating control panels.
- Installed approximately 1-inch aluminum conduit and fittings and 1-5/8-inch aluminum conduit and fittings for the heating, instrumentation, and control systems.
- ESD installed junction boxes, cable-termination boxes, connections, and #10 XHHW copper conductors required for the foundation electrical systems.
- Coordinated electrical installation around the civil foundation construction performed by Johnston Construction Company and CB&I's tank-construction activities.
- Installed raceway and wiring systems in accordance with the detailed heater conduit, RTD conduit, embedded-location, control-panel, heater-wiring, and instrumentation drawings issued for the project.
- ESD coordinated installation of owner/CB&I-furnished instruments and equipment interfaces without overstating responsibility for furnishing the major control and instrumentation components.
- Completed a specialized electrical scope within the larger low-temperature tank foundation system while coordinating with CB&I and JCC construction sequencing.
- Electrical Services Division, LLC served as Trade Subcontractor under Johnston Construction Company for electrical work associated with the Utica East Ohio Midstream tank project in Scio, Ohio. The work supported the foundation systems for one 200,000-barrel propane tank and one 125,000-barrel butane tank being constructed as part of the larger CB&I project.
- The electrical scope focused primarily on the specialized foundation heating and temperature-monitoring systems incorporated into the low-temperature storage-tank foundations. These systems required coordinated installation of heating cable, RTD temperature-sensing circuits, conduit, wiring, termination boxes, and control-panel raceways within and around the foundation construction.
- ESD installed the heat-trace cable and associated terminations serving the foundation heating systems. The work also included installation of RTD cabling and terminations used for monitoring foundation temperatures. This electrical infrastructure was coordinated with the embedded conduit and sleeves incorporated into the civil foundation construction.
Project Description
Johnston Construction Company served as Civil Subcontractor to CB&I for construction of the foundations supporting a 200,000-barrel propane storage tank and a 125,000-barrel butane storage tank at the Utica East Ohio Midstream facility in Scio, Ohio.
Constructed foundation systems for a propane tank approximately 118 feet in diameter × 109.08 feet high and a butane tank approximately 94 feet in diameter × 105.08 feet high.
