Key Accomplishments

Johnston Construction Company

  • The work included replacement of decanting mechanisms, sludge-wasting pumps, process piping, electrical controls, disconnect switches, and junction boxes.
  • JCC installed new manual isolation valves on the SBR influent and decant piping to improve future operational control and maintenance access.
  • The company coordinated the rehabilitation of one SBR tank at a time so the remaining tank could continue treating wastewater during construction.
  • JCC furnished and operated temporary bypass-pumping systems where required to maintain continuous wastewater-treatment operations.
  • The project included removal, pumping, hauling, and disposal of light sludge, grit, debris, and accumulated material from the existing SBR tanks.
  • JCC constructed new internal baffle walls and installed new interior and exterior process piping.
  • The company coordinated inspection of the existing mixers and aeration grids by the treatment-system manufacturer while each tank was drained.
  • JCC installed electrical wiring, controls, disconnects, junction boxes, and actuator connections supporting the replacement valves and process equipment.
  • The company completed equipment testing, operational verification, manufacturer startup, staff instruction, painting, cleanup, and final restoration.
  • Johnston Construction Company performed the WWTP SBR Valve Replacement project for Washington Township Municipal Authority at its wastewater-treatment facility in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
  • The project rehabilitated critical process equipment associated with two existing sequencing batch reactor tanks.
  • Sequencing batch reactors treat wastewater through controlled filling, aeration, settling, decanting, and sludge-removal cycles within the same basin.

B & R Electrical Contractors

  • B & R Electrical Contractors performed the electrical modifications supporting the rehabilitation of two existing sequencing batch reactor tanks at the Washington Township wastewater-treatment plant.
  • BRE disconnected existing electrical equipment and reconnected the replacement decanting mechanisms, motor-operated valves, electrically actuated plug valves, and associated process equipment.
  • The company extended existing conduits and field wiring where required to accommodate the replacement equipment.
  • BRE furnished and installed ten NEMA 4X disconnect switches suitable for the wastewater-treatment environment.
  • The disconnect installation included four units serving the decanting mechanisms, four units serving motor-operated valves, and two units serving electrically actuated plug valves.
  • BRE coordinated 480-volt power connections for the influent plug-valve actuators and 115-volt power connections for the decant and air-valve actuators.
  • The company installed conduit, wire, boxes, devices, switchgear components, and equipment connections required by the project drawings and specifications.
  • BRE coordinated electrical work with JCC’s phased rehabilitation of one SBR tank at a time so the second tank could remain operational.
  • The work included electrical submittals, shop drawings, spare parts, operations and maintenance information, as-built records, startup support, and instruction to operating personnel.
  • BRE performed the electrical installation in accordance with Pennsylvania prevailing-wage requirements and the project’s steel-product procurement provisions.
  • B & R Electrical Contractors, Inc. performed the electrical portion of the Washington Township WWTP SBR Valve Replacement project in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
  • The overall project rehabilitated critical treatment equipment within two existing sequencing batch reactor tanks at the Washington Township Municipal Authority wastewater-treatment plant.
  • The work included replacement of process valves and actuators, decanting mechanisms, sludge-wasting pumps, process piping, internal baffles, electrical connections, temporary bypass pumping, tank cleaning, grit removal, testing, and startup.
  • Washington Township Municipal Authority served as the Owner.
